Paper 1 – Teaching & Research Aptitude


PAPER-I

UGC NET Paper 1 is a common and compulsory paper for all candidates, aimed at testing the teaching and research aptitude of aspirants. It includes 10 units and carries 100 marks for 50 questions (each question carries 2 marks). Here’s the latest and detailed syllabus for UGC NET Paper 1 as per NTA guidelines:


Unit I: Teaching Aptitude

  • Teaching: Concept, Objectives, Levels of Teaching (Memory, Understanding, Reflective), Characteristics and Basic Requirements
  • Learner’s Characteristics: Adolescent and Adult Learners – Academic, Social, Emotional, and Cognitive Characteristics; Individual Differences
  • Factors Affecting Teaching: Related to Teacher, Learner, Support Material, Instructional Facilities, Learning Environment, and Institution
  • Teaching Methods: Teacher-Centred vs. Learner-Centred; Off-line vs. Online Methods (SWAYAM, SWAYAM Prabha, MOOCs, etc.)
  • Teaching Support System: Traditional, Modern, and ICT-Based
  • Evaluation Systems: Elements and Types of Evaluation, Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), Computer-Based Testing, Innovations in Evaluation

Unit II: Research Aptitude

  • Research: Meaning, Types, Characteristics, Positivism & Post-positivistic Approach
  • Methods of Research: Experimental, Descriptive, Historical, Qualitative, Quantitative
  • Steps of Research
  • Thesis and Article Writing: Format, Styles of Referencing
  • ICT in Research

Unit III: Comprehension

  • A passage of text will be given, followed by questions to test reading comprehension, interpretation, and understanding.

  • Meaning, Types, and Characteristics of Communication
  • Effective Communication: Verbal & Non-verbal, Intercultural and Group, Classroom Communication
  • Barriers to Effective Communication
  • Mass Media and Society

Unit V: Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude

  • Types of Reasoning
  • Number Series, Letter Series, Coding-Decoding, Relationships
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Fractions, Time & Distance, Ratio & Proportion, Percentage, Profit & Loss, Interest, Averages, Discounting, etc.

Unit VI: Logical Reasoning

  • Structure of Arguments: Argument Forms, Categorical Propositions, Mood & Figure
  • Fallacies: Formal and Informal Fallacies
  • Connotation & Denotation of Terms, Uses of Language, Classical Square of Opposition
  • Deductive & Inductive Reasoning
  • Analogies and Venn Diagrams (Single & Multiple Sets)
  • Indian Logic:
    • Pramanas: Pratyaksha (Perception), Anumana (Inference), Upamana (Comparison), Shabda (Verbal Testimony), Arthapatti (Implication), Anupalabdhi (Non-apprehension)
